As eager as the two of us had been to get the first rushed round out of the way to reach the good stuff, we were in no hurry to get to round two. Despite the chill outside (and everywhere else in the house), we were both content to lie in front of the fire, naked, limbs tangled up in each other, and just talk.
âTell me about your mom.â
Kieran stroked his fingers through my chest hair. Guy had a fetish, if you asked me. Not that I was complaining. âWhat do you want to know?â
âYou told me you two were close. I want to know what sheâs like.â
âSelfless. Caring. Supportive.â
âSounds like someone else I know. Apple doesnât fall far, huh?â
âIâll take that as a compliment. My mom, sheâs⦠okay, hereâs one. Like I said, when I told her I wanted to move to New York to model, she picked up and moved to Jersey. But her apartment in Newark was a lot smaller than our old one in Evansville, and cost twice as much. Still, sheâd bring me groceries whenever I could barely make rent at whatever one-room shithole Iâd be living in, and tell me how proud she was of me chasing my dream.
âSo after The Seventh King, when I got my first big co-starring roleâmaking almost a millionâI called her up and said I was buying her a house. She said, âNo youâre not.ââ He laughed. âI tried arguing about how much sheâd done for me, and how I wanted to pay her back. She told me, âYou will, but not today. What you can do for me today is give me my first good nightâs sleep in years knowing youâre finally safe.ââ
I wrapped my arm tighter around him. âSounds like you two are lucky to have each other.â
âWe are. I donât think I would've made it without her there with me.â
âWhat would you be doing if acting hadnât panned out?â
Kieran huffed a laugh. âI'm still not sure it has, butâ ââ
âNo, uh-uh. You, my friend, are incredibly talented. Iâd call that panning out.â
âYeah, butâ¦â Frowning, he rolled off me onto his back. âItâs likeâI like you, right? But if I were to take you out on a date and get photographed holding your hand or kissing you on a street corner like a normal person, my chances of getting a lead role in a movie would be decimated. I hate it, and itâs not fucking fair, but thatâs the way it is.â
âSo you play their game, because you have to.â
âExactly. So⦠I donât know. There are times when I think itâs not worth it. Like now, with you.â
âWell, we canât exactly go out in public right now anyway, because everythingâs closed, so thatâs a moot point.â
âTrue.â He laughed. âMost days I try not to think about it, because when I'm on set doing a scene and Iâm in the zone? Thereâs nothing like it. Putting myself inside someone elseâs head for a while, figuring out what makes them tick, what makes them do the things they do? I fucking love it.
